The Smart Home Compatibility Checker
Six pass or fail gates to run before you order, so nothing shows up at your door that your home cannot actually support.
What is inside
- An inventory step that captures what you already own, run once and reused for every purchase after
- Gate 1, platform and ecosystem: will this appear in the app you already use, and who controls it
- Gate 2, network coverage: is there real signal where the device has to live, not where the router is
- Gate 3, power and wiring: neutral wires, load ratings, battery life and outlet clearance
- Gate 4, protocol and hub: does it quietly need a bridge you do not own
- Gate 5, physical fit: dimensions, door thickness, backset, mounting depth
- Gate 6, household and fallback: does it still work for guests, and what happens when the internet drops
- A per device decision sheet you can fill in at the cart and keep in case you need to return something

A return costs an evening, not just shipping
The refund is the easy part. What you do not get back is the evening: unboxing, mounting, pairing, watching the app stall on the last step, searching a forum, slowly deciding it is not you, then repacking the thing and printing a label. The frustrating part is that the handful of things that make a device incompatible are all knowable before you order, and checking them takes roughly ten minutes. This checker turns that ten minutes into a fixed routine, so you are not relying on remembering what went wrong last time.
The gate people skip is power and wiring
Platform is the gate everyone checks, because it is printed on the front of the box. Power and wiring is the gate that sends devices back. The classic case is smart switches and the neutral wire. Plenty of homes, particularly older ones, have switch boxes wired without a neutral, and many smart switches need one to stay powered while the light is off. You cannot tell from the wall plate. The checker shows you how to find out and what your options are if the answer is no, while the switch is still in your cart rather than in your hand.
Fill it in once per device
Each gate is written as a question with a pass or fail answer, not a paragraph you have to interpret. Do the inventory once, then run the six gates against each device you are considering and write the answers on the decision sheet. A single fail is not automatically a no. It simply tells you what else has to be true, or bought, or changed, for that device to work in your home. That is the information you want before you spend, not after.
